Cub Scout Pack 315 Using Lincoln School CCA Center

Last year the Vandalia Park district board asked the Corbell-Denny Memorial Foundation to allow the Cub Scout Pack and other scouts groups, as needed, to transfer their meetings and activities to Lincoln School. Due to questions about the safety and building structural soundness of the Evans Scout House from log deterioration and termite damage for several years, the Park District wanted to eliminate any potential problems for the scouts by finding them a safer home, while final determination on the future of the Scout House building is being decided.

The Lincoln School building has been gradually refurbished since being acquired by the Corbell-Denny Memorial Foundation and with a new boiler, new air conditioning in the classrooms, and new roofs, the building has a lot of rentable and leasable space. The Scouts are using 2 of the classrooms in the south wing on a scheduled basis for meetings 4-8 times a month, the office for a Pack office and storage, and use of the cafeteria space as needed on a scheduled basis. The classrooms have a small bathroom, and adequate storage built in for their activity materials, and provides a sound safe centrally located facility for their meetings. The scout usage schedule is on the Lincoln School web page, www.lincolnschoolccacenter.com, with other usage times and events as get scheduled.

The Foundation is glad to be able to provide this space, but due to increased utilities expense as part of this usage they are needing individuals, organizations, and business from the community to help supplement these bills. The Park District has committed a major portion of the utility bill budget from the Evans Scout house to help with this transition, but last year was unable to fully fund the expenses due to the cold winter months. Insurance and utilities run about $12,000/yr. The Foundation needs additional donations, especially for the winter months, as these expenses cut into the funding used to support other area charitable projects that are funded with required annual distributions from the Foundation.

All funds received by the foundation for use at Lincoln School are tax deductible, and will be used to help to keep the doors open for Vandalia Scouts. Volunteers are always welcome also to help with ongoing maintenance, improvement and cleaning needs. The goal of the Foundation continues to be to help this historical building become an integral part of Vandalia history and used for community and cultural arts needs for the area. Donations can be sent to the First National Bank Trust department and labeled for Lincoln School.
